After 10 years, it was neither an easy, nor a bitter divorce.  You had been there through med school and residency, good times and bad.  After much trepidation, deliberation, and vacillation – I finally decided it was time to move on.  Goodbye Palm Treo – may you rest in peace.  

I am now a convert to the iPhone – a device that is poised to become the gold standard for physicians. For years, doctors have been loyal Palm users.  Why change?  I would argue there are three reasons driving converts:   ease of use, mobile web, and content. 

Ease of Use: I was not an early adopter.  After years of using the Palm, I was convinced that no device could better manage the core functions of a PDA:  contacts, calendar, notes, and tasks.  Well, I was wrong.  Over the past year, I watched closely as older colleagues flocked to the iPhone and adapted to it like a duck to water.  Successful new technologies should be easy to use and simple.   

Mobile Web: EPs live in a 24/7 world.  It is amazing to have the ability to read news and check email while grabbing a sandwich or a cup of coffee. Unlike other PDAs with mobile web, the iPhone’s touch screen is as clear as a computer. 

Content: Detractors often bemoan that the iPhone is a sleek toy, all flash, and no meat.  Definitely not true.  Since the launch of the App Store in June 2008, there are now more than 85,000 apps.    Medical applications that I used for years—Epocrates, Pepid, Hopkins Abx Guide—are even better on the iPhone.  In addition, there are non-medical apps I have grown to love.  These include the NY Times, Traffic.com, Around Me, Pandora, Yelp, and the Starbucks locator. 

I think that emergency physicians will start to find new ways to integrate the iPhone into their practices.  One day, I hope enterprise EMRs will enable us to enter orders, medications, and retrieve results with the iPhone, making it a natural choice for emergency physicians.

I, too, am a longtime Treo user. Just got notice that Epocrates will no longer support Palm updates on a Mac computer! I've been upset and worried all week. I have come so far with my Treo.
